A Start in Price County
One of many promotional cards created to attract farmers to the agricultural land in northern Wisconsin. This card shows a family outside their home in the winter. The caption bellow the photography reads: "This view was taken after this family took up its residence, November 1st, 1896. They were without means, but from work getting out timber from the land, they will live in comfort during the winter and have a nice clearing for crops in the spring." |

Part of the promotional materials created by the Wisconsin Central Railroad Company Land Commissioner to publicize the sale of land in northern Wisconsin, primarily in Price, Taylor, and Ashland counties, owned by the railroad, circa 1895. One side of the card has illustrations of farming conditions, crops, forest resources, homesteads, small towns, and rural scenes in northern Wisconsin. A number of the illustrations are from photographs made by Harvey J. Perkins for "Northern Wisconsin: a hand-book for the homeseeker" and "Hand book of Price County." The reverse side of the card has text touting the abundance of resources available in northern Wisconsin, some of which was taken from "Northern Wisconsin: a hand-book for the homeseeker," edited by William A. Henry. |
