The Hemlock Bark Industry

Promotional card advertising the hemlock barn industry in northern Wisconsin. The card features an elevated view of a tannery. Caption: THE HEMLOCK BARK INDUSTRY. - It has only been within the past few years that the farmers and the owners of timber land in Price and Taylor Counties could realize upon the sale of hemlock, The introduction of the tanning business has opened the way for profitable employment in the peeling of hemlock bark which is now being used by the several tanneries along the line of the Wisconsin Central Railroad Company. This tannery is located at Medford, and back of the buildings can be seen the great pile of bark ready for grinding. Similar tanneries are situated at Perkinstown, Rib Lake and Westboro in Taylor County, Prentice and Phillips in Price County, Mellen in Ashland. The price furnished a profitable employment to the farmers during the winter season and this is of great advantage. |
