Prof. L.G. Sorden of the College of Agriculture is of the opinion that this was a coffin factory: "On the right are 3 log pieces the same height where pine boxes are nailed together. In the shed are many coffins of different sizes. In front of each row is a large wooden triangle which could be used for a marker until something more substantial like a stone can be placed. In the middle, right back of log pieces, is blanket material to line the boxes when used." - Wisconsin Then and Now. Madison, WI: State Historical Society of Wisconsin. This image is one of many that was created for Northern Wisconsin: A Hand-Book for the Homeseeker (1896), a promotional survey for the Wisconsin College of Agriculture by W.A. Henry. Henry was the Dean of the College of Agriculture at the University of Wisconsin. |
