Carvers at Work

Carvers at work on the Karl Bitter sculpture for the fourth Wisconsin State Capitol (third in Madison). Between 1911 and 1913, a group of stone cutters (many of them Italian) worked on the four figural groups designed for the base of the dome. The figures were first carved near the Milwaukee Road shed and then hoisted into place when completed. Seen here are figures (left to right) faith, abundance, and three elements from strength. |
