The text on the back of the photograph reads: "Wichita, Kansas. June 5, 1918. International Harvester Company of America, Hutchinson, Kansas. Gentlemen: I have your letter of June 1st. In 1890 the writer commenced experimenting with gasoline engines for the purpose of plowing and running threshing machines, or any machinery that could be used in connection with a traction engine. In 1893 the Gasoline Tractor & Plow Co. was organized. I am mailing you two photographs of my experiments, and if you care to use them do so, but I would like to have them returned when you are through with them. I built a traction engine that pulled a threshing machine around the vicinity of Sterling and Lyons, Kans., and worked on this proposition for about six years, from 1890 until 1896, and then the Company run (sic) out of money, so I gave the matter up. I am pretty sure that I had the first gasoline traction engine, but of course did not have it quite perfect. Yours respectfully, (Signed) J.A. Hockett." |
