Freedom School Reenactment of a Slave Revolt

Three people stand outdoors near a truck acting out a group improvisation of a slave revolt. They were attending Freedom School during Freedom Summer at Palmer's Crossing, near Hattiesburg. "Acting out history was a popular activity in the Freedom School curriculum. The student in center is the 'master'; the two others are his faithful 'toms' betraying a plot by fellow slaves to him. The students liked to play the role of 'tom' to get out their anger at those who played that role in real life." |
