House, Beekman Quarters
"Roof leaks. Yard is too treacherous to play in or to hang out clothes. This photo was taken from the street as a tenant looked out the front door down the 'sidewalk.' Two adults and their 1 1/2 year and 4 month old children live here. They must heat and cook with wood which must be carried up this path. Slippery when wet!" Beekman Quarters housed 81 people in 23 buildings. None of the houses in the neighborhood had running water or gas/electric heating; the neighborhood had 15 outdoor toilets and 11 outdoor water hydrants. |
