Army Nurse Killed in Action

Head and shoulders portrait of Ellen G. Ainsworth, published in the Milwaukee Sentinel. She was an Army nurse killed in action on February 16th, 1944, at Anzio, Italy. She was the only Wisconsin military woman killed by hostile fire in a war in the 20th century and possibly earlier. She remained the only Wisconsin woman killed by hostile fire until 1991. |
