Left to right are Crew Chief Sergeant Clyde Cheney (shirtless) of Milwaukee, Instrument Specialist Sergeant Leander A. Grosse (shirtless) of Cross Plains and Navigator and Bombardier Captain Sylvester Hoffman of Madison. Hoffman is wearing a leather bomber jacket, flying helmet and goggles. On the jacket is a patch with a skull and wings. The airfield is near Port Moresby, New Guinea (present day Papua New Guinea). |

Robert Doyle was a civilian war correspondent for the Milwaukee Journal during World War II, covering the experiences of Wisconsin troops in the 32nd "Red Arrow" Division, an infantry division of the United States Army National Guard. The "Red Arrow" Division consisted mainly of soldiers from Wisconsin and Michigan. |
