The seven buildings in this district were built between 1854 and 1914 in Gothic Revival style to look like Medieval fortresses to give the public a feeling of security. The prison was, built between 1858 and 1861, is a 24-foot high limestone wall punctuated by octagonal guard houses. Located in a residential neighborhood on Madison Street, this was the state's first prison. |
