SUMMARY
Manchester Street Bridge
Ochsner Park, City of Baraboo, Sauk County
Architect: Milwaukee Bridge & Iron Works
Date of Construction: 1884

The Manchester Street Bridge, located in Baraboo’s Ochsner Park, is a single span, metal, pin-connected Camelback through truss bridge. The Manchester Street Bridge was constructed by the Milwaukee Bridge & Iron Works, a prolific late-nineteenth century firm that built bridges throughout the Midwest.

The bridge’s original location was at the Lower-Ox Bow in Baraboo. The bridge had been in vehicular/transportation service since its construction until 1987; the year it was slated for replacement. Due to its uniqueness as the only pre-1900 Camelback truss in Wisconsin; however, the Federal Highway Administration agreed to save and relocate it. It was partially dismantled and moved to its current location in Baraboo during the fall of 1987; it currently spans the Baraboo River and is used as a foot bridge.

The Manchester Street Bridge is now the only remaining Camelback through truss bridge in Wisconsin. Up until 1989, there had been two such bridges in Wisconsin, the other being the Kennan-Jump River Bridge. The Kennan-Jump River Bridge, which was located in Price County, was demolished and rebuilt.
