SUMMARY
Angie Williams Cox Library
129 North Main Street, Pardeeville, Columbia County
Architect: Leon Stanhope
Dates of Construction: c.1900, 1934

Angie Williams Cox was a educational philanthropist in the village of Pardeeville. In 1910 she convinced the local newspaper editor to provide a shelf space in his print shop for a few books, most of which she donated, to be available to the community. The collection soon outgrew the shelf space and in 1925 Cox purchased a building on Main Street to house the collection but again it soon became too large. In 1934 Cox then purchased the Odd Fellows Lodge and donated it to the village. The building was extensively renovated to accommodate the growing library. In addition, Cox gave thousands of dollars worth of books, furniture and equipment to the library. She also selected and purchased the books and magazines.

The original building was built in the Colonial Revival style. In the 1934 renovation, architect Leon Stanhope chose a Georgian Revival façade. Its temple front is symmetrically divided into three equal bays by large pilasters and topped by an ornate entablature. On the first level two doors flank a center bow window, each with a jack arch lintel above. Blind arched reveals integrate the paired casements on the second level. The façade appearance suggests a three story building but it is only two.

The library was the primary facility for a wide variety of social and fraternal groups. Provisions were made to lease the second floor lodge room to these various community groups. The library rooms also accommodated teacher¿s exhibition, demonstrations and meetings.

The library is still in operation and is open during regular hours.
