SUMMARY
Dr. Alfred L. Castleman House
975 South Waterville Road, Town of Summit, Waukesha County
Date of construction: between 1842 and 1845

Distinguished pioneer physician Alfred Castleman was born in Kentucky in 1809 and received his medical training in Louisville. In 1835, he arrived in Milwaukee and set up a private practice. About 1841 he moved westward to a growing community in the Town of Delafield. Dr. Castleman was active in civic and professional areas; he attended the second State Constitutional Convention, was a Regent of the University of Wisconsin, and was a charter member of the Medical Society of Wisconsin. He died in California in 1877.

About 1844 Dr. Castleman erected this Greek Revival house. The building is a somewhat rare Wisconsin example of a full-width front porch subtype, more commonly found in the South. Four large, square posts support the roof of the wide porch. While doors lead from formal parlors onto the porch, the main entrance to the house is in the gable end, opening into the stairhall.

The house was constructed in two parts. The main section with the large porch was built first and the rear wing was added later, around 1845. The house originally stood on West Main Street in Delafield, but was moved to save it from demolition. The house has been restored to its historic appearance and now sits in a setting similar to its original site.

The house is located on private property and is not open to the public. Please respect the privacy of the owners.
