Waupun Public Library 22 South Madison Street, Waupun, Dodge County Architect: Henry A. Foeller Date of Construction: 1904 The Waupun Public Library is set in a residential area. It was funded by a gift from the Carnegie Foundation. Green Bay architect H.A. Foeller competed against seven other firms to win the library commission. Although it is a small building, its Tudor Revival influenced design gives it a sense of monumentality. It is constructed from locally cut limestone. A Tudor arch frames the building's entrance and is topped by a panel reading "Waupun Public Library." In the gable above a stringcourse is inscribed with the name "Carnegie" as testimony to Andrew Carnegie's gift. The double door entrance is sheltered by a canopy and an arched transom window sits above. Smooth stone sill courses and lintel courses encircle the entire building providing textural contrast to the rustic stone mass. The main floor of the library is divided into several alcoves by seven-foot high stacks. In 1907 a basement lecture room was finished and furnished with a bequest from E.M. Beach, while the remainder of the basement was completed with another gift from the Carnegie Foundation. The library was a major social and educational center for local groups such as the Waupun Chapter of the Daughters of American Revolution, League of Women Voters, Youth Council, and the Boots & Saddle Club. The library now serves as the Waupun Heritage Museum and is open limited hours. |
