SUMMARY
Henry L. and Sarah Dahle House
314 S. Fourth St.
Mt. Horeb, Dane County
Architect: Claude & Starck
Construction Date: 1916

Henry L. Dahle's Prairie School style home occupies one of Mt. Horeb's highest points. The Dahles were among Mt. Horeb's most successful businesspeople. Henry's father, a pioneer general store owner in nearby Perry Township, moved to Mt. Horeb in 1895, and joined his sons in business. Between their bank, general store and other ventures, the family became the principal merchants of Mt. Horeb. Henry had just begun the construction of his new home when he was taken ill and died. His widow, Sarah, completed the house. She and later her daughter, lived there until the house left the family in the mid-1990s.

Madison architectural firm Claude & Starck designed the Dahle house. The firm produced numerous excellent Prairie School style buildings in Wisconsin and elsewhere between 1900 and 1920. This late example has dark brown brick walls and gable ends clad in painted stucco. The walls are sheltered by extremely wide overhanging eaves whose undersides are covered with stucco decorated with wood trim laid in parallel strips. Green-colored ceramic tiles covered the roof. The house also preserves one of Claude & Starck's most elaborate and intact interiors.

Claude & Starck also designed the Prairie School style Mt. Horeb Public School building on nearby Academy Street; begun one year after the Dahle house was completed.

The property is a private residence. Please respect the privacy of the owners.
