The original owners of this large Queen Anne style house were John A. and Maggie Jones. John A. Jones (1863-1948) came to Columbus from his family's farm in adjacent Dodge County in 1888. For three years, Jones was a clerk in the drugstore of John Williams, but after passing the state licensing exam in 1893 and becoming a certified pharmacist, he formed a partnership with Joshua Roberts, a jeweler, and the two men made their new firm into the city's most successful drug and jewelry business. This firm was housed in the Jones Block, which is still extant and is located at 125-127 E. James Street.
By 1900, Jones was wealthy enough to build a new, large house for his family on a corner lot that faced onto N. Ludington Street, one of Columbus's most important streets. This house is an excellent example of what is sometimes called the Free Classic variant of the Queen Anne style. The term Free Classic derives from the fact that the detailing on these later examples of the Queen Anne style was inspired by classical Greek and Roman architecture and is very similar to the details that are found on eighteenth century Georgian Style English and American houses. Free Classic Queen Anne style houses have porch columns that use classical orders rather than the more delicate turned posts that are typical of earlier examples of the Queen Anne style. Palladian windows, such as the one in the Jones house's front-facing gable end, and cornice-line dentils and other classical details are also typical of these designs.
