SUMMARY
Jabodon
1460 Everett Rd., Town of Washington, Vilas County
Dates of construction of contributing resources: 1924-1947

Jabodon is an intact example of a Northern Wisconsin vacation estate constructed in the first half of the twentieth century. The property is located on the shores of Cranberry Lake, one of the 28 lakes that make up the Eagle River Chain of Lakes. As with other similar examples, the vacation home's parcel began as part of a larger property associated with a resort. The Everett Resort, from which the Jabodon parcel was carved in 1922, was established in the 1890s.

The Craftsman style inspired house was constructed in 1924. The original boathouse probably dated to the same year. After a devastating fire, the boathouse was rebuilt in 1937. The owners added additional recreational facilities, including a swimming pool and tennis courts, to the property in the 1940s. These later resources demonstrate the more active lifestyle associated with vacation homes by mid-century.

The house, additional facilities, and grounds reflect the growing popularity of Northern Wisconsin as a summer season and vacation destination. The private vacation estates provided the Midwest's wealthier families a place to escape from the heat of the cities and a location for a more casual lifestyle. However, the homes they constructed still provided ample room for entertainment and often contained servants' quarters. The large open room in Jabodon's boathouse was known as a popular gathering spot for meetings, parties and dances.

Jabodon is a private residence and is not open to the public. Please respect the rights and privacy of the owners.
