Summary

George and Tuve Holborn House
W10507 State Highway 60 (524 Portage Street), Town of Lodi, Columbia County
Construction Date: 1915

The George and Tuve Holborn house sits on a slight rise on the northeast edge of the city of Lodi overlooking school playing fields. George Holborn was born in 1866; he was raised in Lodi but later moved to South Dakota, where he subsequently began a very successful career as a dealer in real estate. In 1903, Holborn moved back to Lodi and two years later he married Tuve Reitman. The new couple immediately set up housekeeping on the outskirts of Lodi in a house that had belonged to another member of the Holborn family. By 1914, Holborn's considerable success made it possible for him to consider remodeling and enlarging this house. He began by having the cobble stone retaining wall built that still stretches across the entire front of the property. However, by 1915, he had decided to build a new, more modern, house on this site instead. The result was the finest example of the Craftsman Style in the city, which the local newspaper said cost $9000 and was "one of the finest [houses] in Town."

The Holborns' house is a superb example of the Craftsman Style. The house sits on a fieldstone-clad foundation; its walls that are clad in painted stucco and are sheltered by wide overhanging eaves that are supported by massive brackets. The front of the house features a full-width open front porch that faces the view, while the rear of the house features a first story screened porch and a large second story sleeping porch. Also notable are the bay windows on both of the house's side elevations, which contain deep window seats. In addition, the house contains a fine, highly intact and characteristic Craftsman style interior that is notable for its openness, its simplicity, and for its high quality of materials.

The Holborn House is a private home. Please respect the rights and privacy of the residents.
