Date of Construction: 1925; garage addition: 1940

In 1924 the Town of Allouez established a water department and one year later constructed this municipal water utility pump house in the Mediterranean Revival style. The Mediterranean Revival style was popular in the 1920s, though rarely used in public building design, which makes this building particularly unique in Wisconsin. The stepped parapet wall and the distinctive clay tile roof help identify the style and although the garage side- addition was added about 15 years later, it was carefully designed to blend harmoniously with the original architecture. The building is composed of three sections: the main pump room and rectangular reservoir, a small garage and water softening addition to the east, and a newer, large round reservoir to the north.

The establishment of a water department and the construction of this utility building represents both the growth of the community and the importance of providing a supply of clean water to residents. Water utility projects were an important advancement in public health amenities and at the time of construction, this building certainly was a source of community pride. Allouez municipal leaders’ sustained commitment to the care, maintenance and preservation of this building continues to reflect the pride the community has in this pump house.
