SUMMARY
Schofield School
1310 South Grand Avenue, Schofield, Marathon County
Date of Construction: 1923, addition in 1959
Architects: Oppenhamer & Obel; addition: Edgar Stubenrauch & Associates

The oldest surviving school in the community, the Schofield School is an early example of a modern grade school building, designed in the Collegiate Gothic style. Designed by the Wausau-based architectural firm of Oppenhamer & Obel and completed in 1923, the Schofield School incorporated a variety of specialized spaces including a gymnasium and auditorium to accommodate a wide range of pupils from kindergarten through eighth grade. The school represents the expansion of public school education in Schofield and the changing ideals surrounding primary and secondary education nationwide.

An addition to the original building, designed in the Mid-century Modern style by architects Edgar Stubenrauch & Associates and completed in 1959, contributes to the architectural significance of the building. The Schofield School served as the primary grade school for the city of Schofield and portions of the neighboring town of Weston until its closing in 2011 and embodies the history of public primary education in the community.
