SUMMARY
Simonds 10-Sided Barn
S4680 Rocky Point Road, Town of Greenfield, Sauk County
Builder: Orville O. Kramer and Otto J. Kramer
Date of Construction: 1916

Centric barns were frequently favored by farmers who wanted to minimize physical labor; this was one of the advertised advantages of the building form. Considering Ben Simonds’ old age, this may have been considered in the favored design of the barn. The building served a variety of purposes including milking, refuge, hay and feed storage, and as a place for social events such as dances.

The Simonds 10-Sided Barn is approximately 42 feet in diameter and height, constructed in 1916. The barn was constructed for Benjamin Simmonds as an old man for use as a small dairy barn. Simonds was a school teacher who had lived most of his life in the Town of Greenfield in Sauk County, where the barn is located.

The barn is divided into two levels with the feeding and milking stalls on the lower level and the haymow on the second level. There is an interior round silo slightly off-set from the center. The building has a stone rubble and concrete foundation with board-and-batten wood siding and a standing seam metal roof, all of which are the original historic materials. The Simonds Barn is unique, even among centric barns, because of its dodecahedral shape and off-set silo.
