Bishop Stanislaus Vincent Bona Cabin
W9420 Bona Drive Minong, WI
Date of construction – 1925
The Bishop Stanislaus Vincent Bona Cabin is a fine example of Rustic Style Architecture. At the turn of the twentieth century, tourists began visiting our National Parks and as such were exposed to the log buildings within the parks. The rustic design, simple utility and the unity of the buildings with their natural surrounds gave birth to the Rustic Style.
The builders of the Bona cabin, whether intentionally or accidentally, created a nostalgic building that was unified with its surrounding natural environment. The horizontal orientation of the large peeled pine logs is honest and unpretentious. The half-cut log corner joint is more primordial than the commonly used saddle-notch joint corner adding to the primitive nature of the cabin. The picturesque yet unsophisticated atmosphere interpreted in this log cabin suited Bishop Bono and the original 9 priests who needed to seek refuge on Scovils Lake to rest, reflect, have fun and regenerate.
The Bishop Stanislaus Vincent Bono cabin exemplifies the Rustic Style of the early-twentieth century Northern Wisconsin Resort Era. In the time frame from 1906 to the mid 1940’s, log cabins and log lodges could be found all across the Northwoods of northern Wisconsin. Unfortunately, many of these log cabins and lodges were lost to deterioration, fire or just abandoned and consumed by the surrounding forest. The Bishop Stanislaus Vincent Bono cabin is one of the few examples of Rustic Architecture that remains in Washburn County Wisconsin which has remained in constant use.
