SUMMARY
Welty, Daniel and Catherine, Barn Town of Wiota, Lafayette County, WI Date of Construction: ca. 1850 The Daniel and Catherine Welty Barn is a Grundscheier or “ground” barn, a type that German immigrants and their descendants built in southeastern Pennsylvania during the mid-nineteenth century. The Welty Barn is of timber-frame and load-bearing masonry construction and was erected ca. 1850. The Welty Barn is located on 13 acres in rural Darlington, WI located in the Wiota township in Lafayette County WI. The Welty family moved west from their homestead in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania in 1843 settling in southern Wisconsin in 1848. The family came to Wisconsin via ox team and consisted of Daniel, his wife Catherine, and thirteen children: nine sons and four daughters. The Welty family settled on approximately 80 acres that were purchased by deed on June 15, 1848. Once acquired the family set about building their homestead. The Welty family lived on the property until sometime in 1866 when it was sold after the death of Daniel. During their residence, the family grew wheat. The Welty Barn is significant in architecture as a good and intact example of a Grundscheier or “ground barn.” It is the only known example of this building type in Wisconsin.
