SUMMARY
Henry D.L. and Jennie Adkins House
24 North Church Street, Elkhorn, Walworth County
Date of Construction: 1909
Architect: Henry K. Holsman

The Henry D.L. and Jennie Adkins House is a two-story brick Georgian Revival-style house constructed in 1909. The house was designed by prominent Chicago architect Henry K. Holsman. Since its construction, the house has retained its fine period revival details and craftsmanship as well as its distinctive residential feel. Located in downtown Elkhorn, a small city in southeastern Wisconsin. The house faces west across Church Street onto the courthouse square, a park-like area that historically and currently contains the Walworth County governmental offices. The courthouse square is lined with historic commercial and civic buildings on its east and south sides, while the west and north sides contain residences and churches, many of them large and finely detailed.

The Adkins house was designed by Chicago architect Henry K. Holsman and was constructed in 1909. At the time the Adkins house was built, its architect, Holsman, was known as a designer of collegiate building and apartments, many of them in similar Georgian Revival and related classical styles. For the Adkins house, Holsman utilized a similar architectural vocabulary he had developed for several campus buildings at Parsons College in Iowa and for a four-flat apartment building in the Hyde Park neighborhood of Chicago, near the University of Chicago campus.

The house features a symmetrical façade, distinctive textured brick cladding, a prominent front porch with classical columns, windows with divided upper lights and exaggerated keystone lintels, and an elaborate cornice with dentils and modillions. These character-defining features have been maintained and preserved in the years since the house was constructed, and the property remains in excellent condition with a high degree of integrity.

It is a private home and is not open to the public. Please respect the privacy of the property owner.
