SUMMARY
St. Gabriel’s Roman Catholic Church
506 North Beaumont Road, Prairie du Chien, Crawford County
Architects: Schick and Roth (1908); Hackner, Schroeder and Associates (1966); Father Samuel Mazzuchelli (1839)
Dates of Construction: 1839; 1908; 1966

St. Gabriel’s Roman Catholic Church is significant as a very good ecclesiastical example of the Gothic Revival style of architecture. Although the building’s initial 1830s-era design, produced by Father Samuel Mazzuchelli, established a modest or “chaste” Gothic Revival style through its pointed-arch windows, the 1908 remodeling fully embraced the Gothic Revival style. Featuring an imposing dual-towered entrance façade finished in quarried cut stone and a central stone entrance surround anchored by tower-like projections, the ecclesiastical building exhibits additional pointed-arch doors and windows, most of which are trimmed with either smooth cut stone hoods or raised hood molds. Turret-like ornamentation topped with crockets, along with gablet projections, embellish the roof level of each tower. Furthermore, the building continues to prominently display original and colorful stained-glass windows.

Although the interior was remodeled in response to the recommendations laid out by the Second Vatican Ecumenical Council (Vatican II), the church retains its 1908 basilica plan and its oversimplified 1966 redecoration, including wooden open trusswork that harks back to the church’s 1830s-era beginnings.
