William Clark House 320 Walnut Street, Baraboo, Sauk County Date of Construction: mid-1880s Builder: J. McVea The William Clark House is located at the crest of a hill overlooking downtown Baraboo, Wisconsin. At the time the Clark house was constructed, the neighborhood surrounding it was known as South Baraboo – a working-class residential area near Baraboo's rail corridor and river valley industries. William Clark, an engineer for the Chicago and NorthWestern Railroad, chose J. McVea, a local Baraboo carpenter, to build his home during the mid-1880s. This brick house has a high basement and a full story behind a steeply-pitched metal mansard roof. The roof form is a signature element of the Second Empire Style, popular in America between the 1860s and the 1880s. The Clark House is a fine local example of the style as interpreted for a middle class family. Historic maps indicate that two additional frame buildings, identified by an early owner as a woodshed and a summer kitchen, once stood at the back of the house. They were removed shortly after 1913. The Clark House is a private residence. Please respect the residents' rights and privacy. |
