SUMMARY
St. John's Episcopal Church
400 North Water Street, Sparta, Monroe County
Date of Construction: 1863

When built, St. John's Episcopal Church resembled the early Gothic Revival church designs of the 1850s-1870s published by A.J. Downing and Richard Upjohn. Prior to the construction of a parish church, Episcopal services were held in the 1850s in the Union Block or Old Methodist church in Sparta.

The congregation purchased a lot for the new church in 1861. Construction of the church began in 1862. In 1863, with the completion of the church building, the parish was formally organized and the building was consecrated in 1879.

The church stands today in an altered form.
