Characterized by two- and three-story structures, many sharing party walls, the district includes 19th century hotels, commercial blocks, opera houses, carriage works, blacksmith shops and a railroad depot all surrounding the original village square park (which now includes parking). Built between 1860 and 1930, the 35 historic buildings are in Italianate, Queen Anne, and Commercial Vernacular styles.
