Fox Hall
5183 County Highway M, Fitchburg, Dane County, Wisconsin
Builder: George Fox
Date of Construction: 1856
As time passes, historic properties often undergo drastic changes to their exteriors and interiors, whether to accommodate modern amenities, repair or replace broken or aging systems, or even simply to adhere to modern tastes. Fox Hall in Dane County is unique in that it has maintained almost all of its interior and exterior integrity, and remains one of the best-preserved examples of a mid-nineteenth century stone farmhouse in Wisconsin. Built by George Fox in 1856, Fox Hall has kept all of its original windows and doors, as well as the wide-profiled wood moldings around these openings.
While not highly stylized, Fox Hall features influences from both the Greek Revival and Italianate styles. The floor plans on the first and second levels have also remained unchanged, except for the addition of a bathroom on the rear porch. Added in 1935 as a concession to modernity, the bathroom addition nevertheless blends well with the rest of the structure, and, by adding it onto the exterior porch, allowed the original second floor interior to remain intact. The reason that this house has such a high interior and exterior integrity is that, for much of its existence, it served as a summer vacation home for the Fox family and so was only sporadically inhabited. At the time of nomination, Fox Hall had been owned by the Fox family for six generations, adding to its already impressive integrity.
