Additional Information: | Built to house the plumbing business of Louis Moede & Sons as well as four apartments in the second story. Builder was Fred Lemke of Shawano. 2025: The Louis Moede Building is two-story International style retail and apartment building located at the southwest corner of S Main Street and W Prairie Street. It was built for Moede and Sons, Inc., a plumbing and heating business. Constructed in 1947, the reinforced concrete building has a rectilinear footprint, stucco clad exterior walls, and a flat roof with widely overhanging eaves. The exterior walls are smooth and have no applied surface decorations. The façade (east elevation) consists of two storefronts; at the center of the façade is a recessed entrance bay with aluminum and glass doors. Each storefront features a showroom with angular aluminum-framed window walls. The north and south (side) elevations of the first story are asymmetrically arranged with several secondary entrances and window openings. Multiple windows styles are present, including single and multi-pane vinyl replacement sashes, aluminum framed windows, and glass block windows. The second story consists of two square apartment blocks surrounded by a cantilevered metal walkway with a metal balustrade and regularly spaced poles that support the eaves of the main roof. The blocks are symmetrically arranged and each have four units. The apartments have aluminum-framed Chicago style windows characterized by large central panes flanked by one-over-one sidelights; the windows wrap around every corner of the apartment blocks. |
