Additional Information: | A 'site file' titled "Holtan Heights Homes Historic District" exists for this property. It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the Wisconsin Historical Society, Division of Historic Preservation-Public History. RIBBON WINDOWS. MATCHING GARAGE. This house is an example of the Italian Renaissance style of architecture. Construction of the house began in August of 1924 and was not completed until the end of 1925. Although the architect is not known, the mason work was done by Morrissey Bros. of Elkhorn and the carpenter work was performed by T.R. Brigham of Darien. This was the home of Frank Holton, the owner of Frank Holton & Co., makers of band instruments. This business originated in Chicago in 1898. In 1917, the decision was made to move to Elkhorn and, in 1918, the factory began producing instruments. The factory, which is located a few blocks away on N. Church Street, still makes Holton instruments. Holton died in 1942 and his wife passed in June of 1951. The house was later sold for use as a nursing home from 1953 to the 1990s, when a new nursing home facility was built next door and the house has been returned to single-family use. |
