Madison Historic Landmark:9/18/2007.

While the entire Madison East High School was designed at one time, its historic-period design was built in sections between 1922 and 1939. Designed by Frank Riley, the main block was completed in 1922 with other blocks being constructed in 1925, 1932, and 1938-9. The school was planned not only to relieve the overcrowding in the city's only other public high school, but also to present a quality educational and community facility to Madison's rapidly growing east side. the East Side possessed a significant number of immigrants and working-class residents who worked in the many nearby factories. The school complex was designed as an educational facility and a community center complete with auditorium, gymnasium, outdoor playground, and manual arts training facility. When it first opened, the complex was able to house 600 students and by the time all the historic-period blocks were completed the building had a capacity of 1,800.
