Additional Information: | THIS WAS THE LONG-TIME HOME OF THE AMBROSE FAMILY. DR. AMBROSE WAS THE LONG-TIME PHYSICIAN AT THE WHITEWATER STATE COLLEGE (LATER UWW-WHITEWATER). ROSEPHA AMBROSE WAS A MID-TWENTIETH CENTURY CIVIC LEADER, THE FIRST WOMAN ELECTED TO THE WALWORTH COUNTY BOARD AND ACTIVE IN THE COMMUNITY. THEY WERE THE PARENTS OF NOTED HISTORIAN AND WRITER, STEPHEN AMBROSE, WHO LIVED HERE UNTIL HE WENT TO COLLEGE. "This stately Queen Anne style house was originally owned by Haywood Humphrey, owner of the Century Pen Company. The house was later the childhood home of author/historian Stephen E. Ambrose. It was built between 1887 and 1892. The house retains many elegant structural and decorative features typical of this style, including original beveled glass windows and an embossed metal fireplace facing. A small Stephen Ambrose exhibit, including a photo of this house, as it looked during Ambrose's childhood, can be found at the Irvin L. Young Public Library." Touring Historical Whitewater, n.d. |
