AHI# 103830, AHI # 13542, AHI# 103865, AHI# 237449 The earliest records of a Catholic parish in Port Washington date to 1847 and the first small non-extant wood church was constructed in 1849 on the bluff north of downtown Port Washington, often referred to as Church Hill. The church was replaced with a larger non-extant stone church in 1860 along with a small, attached school and convent. By 1881, this predominately German-speaking congregation had grown to nearly 1,100 parishioners. A new Gothic Revival church was begun the same year. St. Mary’s Catholic Church, located at 451 North Johnson Street, is already listed individually in the National Register of Historic Places. The stone building, designed by architect Henry Mesmer, cost over $70,000 and was completed in 1884. A non-extant rectory was constructed to the west of the church in 1900 and in 1911, a brick convent was constructed across the street from the church. St. Mary’s Catholic School was completed in 1916 and a new rectory was completed in 1964, replacing the older one. |
