NOTES
Additional Information:This two-story Neoclassical building was built in 1906 as a Joseph Schlitz Brewing Co. tavern and designed by architect Charles Lesser. The building is clad in painted brick with painted stone sills and keystones. The first story front (National Ave.) elevation contains two storefronts and a cutaway corner entry. The storefronts have been replaced entirely, and the corner entry has been reclad in fieldstone veneer with aluminum windows above. A molded brick cornice caps the storefronts and corner entry. A continuous brick string course runs along the base of the second story windows. The front elevation has six tall arched openings with brick voussoir molding and stone keystones. Set within each arched opening is a rectangular-headed double hung window with jack arch lintels. The 22nd St. (east) elevation contains a group of seven similar arches and windows. The entire facade is capped with a brick cornice. The uppermost edge of the low parapet has tile coping. This building utilizes the same architectural vocabulary as another Schlitz tavern at 3527 W. National Ave. (AHI #116327), also designed by Charles Lesser, although that building incorporates additional materials such as terra cotta and stone, as well as more elaborate architectural detailing.
