Additional Information: | A 'site file' exists for this property. It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the Wisconsin Historical Society, State Historic Preservation Office. Milwaukee Connector Survey, Prepared by Heritage Research (2010). DOE prepared by Heritage Research (2010). Contructed in 1925 as a 43-unit apartment building for an approximate cost of $150,000. Its original building permit lists Roland O. Razall as architect and Orlo H. Adams and George W. Adams as owners. Orlo and George served as officers in the George W. Adams Building & Construction Company, which was a building, construction and finance firm. A "Milwaukee Journal" article regarding the subject building indicates that it would be an apartment hotel with a large lobby featuring Caen stone and Mexican mahogany, fountains and a marble staircase. Apartments would contain 4 or 5 rooms with 1 or 2 bathrooms. Contractors included: Brun Construction Co, carpentry; H. Niedner, tile flooring; Frank Grossman, plastering; T.C. Esser Co, glass and glazing; Wagner Bros, art glass; Atlas Electric Co, electrical wiring; and Paul Kurth Plumbing Co, plumbing. Resurveyed as part of Milwaukee Downtown Connector Arch/History Survey (2010), Prepared by Heritage Research. 2010: This three-story, Tudor Revival-style, brick apartment building features a projecting, one-story, castellated entrance block that is heavily accented with limestone trim. The facade also carries a castellated parapet. Building fenestration consists of multiple-light, leaded-glass, double-hung and casement windows with leaded-glass transoms on the primary (west) facade. Primary facade window openings also feature cut limestone surrounds, drip molds and metal balconets while openings on side elevations simply contain brick lintels and sills. Repeating canted corner bays and the side elevations optimize the amount of natural light in the building interior. A lannon stone retaining wall creates a raised front lawn between the apartment building and the city sidewalk. |
