Additional Information: | A 'site file' exists for this property. It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the Wisconsin Historical Society, State Historic Preservation Office. 2010: A collection of several styles, this two-story, cut stone-veneered building has a hipped roof with heavy, carved wooden brackets under the eaves. A one-story, squared bay with a block modillion cornice is found on the southwest elevation. The two-story, stone-veneered addition on the primary (southeast) facade projects beyond the roof and features a recessed, center entrance with a pediment and eight-light sidelights. Fenestration consists of one-over-one, double-hung windows. Built circa 1876, the subject building was remodeled in 1904 by Fernekes & Cramer for John H. Frank as a residence. Frank was the president and manager of the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music. Part of the remodeling involved replacing the building's brick veneer with a stone veneer. In the 1920s and 1930s, the building was the home of the Milwaukee Institute of Music, which was operated by J. Raymond Meyer. The addition on the primary facade was constructed in 1947, at which time the building housed Lakeview Hospital. Lakeview was owned by doctors Fred Hecker, Carl Blech and Paul Alterley. The hospital housed thirty-eight patients and closed in the 1960s due to competition from larger hospitals. Resurveyed as part of Milwaukee Downtown Connector Arch/History Survey (2010), Prepared by Heritage Research. |
