Additional Information: | PAIRED BRACKETS UNDER EAVES. [Date Cnst:CA]. THIS HOUSE HAS A TWO-STORY SQUARE-PLAN MAIN BLOCK AND A LESS TALL, LESS WIDE, AND LONGER REAR ELL. SINCE THIS HOUSE WAS FIRST SURVEYED IN 1975 IT HAS BEEN RESIDED IN VINYL. THERE IS ALSO A ONE-STORY ADDITION ATTACHED TO THE REAR ELEVATION OF THE ELL THAT WAS BUILT PRIOR TO 1975, BUT WHICH IS NOT BELIEVED TO BE ORIGINAL TO THE HOUSE. HISTORIC MAPS SHOW THAT THIS PROPERTY WAS OWNED BY G. W. HOYT IN 1858 AND BY IRA D. RICE FROM AT LEAST 1873 UNTIL AT LEAST 1887. A BRIEF BIOGRAPHY OF RICE IS INCLUDED IN THE 1879 HISTORY OF RACINE COUNTY CITED ABOVE. A HOUSE IS INDICATED ON THIS SITE ON THE 1858 MAP BUT IT IS NOT KNOWN IF IT IS THE SAME ONE THAT IS THERE NOW. Between 2005 and 2008, the property drive was relocated from STH 83/Northwest Highway to STH 20/High Dr. The property address has been updated to reflect that change. The entrance is centered on the east elevation. 2005- "This previously surveyed ltalianate Style farmhouse has a T-plan and consists of a two-story-tall square plan main block and a less tall two-story-tall rear ell. The main block has at least a partial stone foundation but the portion under the rear ell may now be partially composed of either poured concrete or concrete block. The exterior walls of the main block appear to be still clad in clapboards but the rear ell is now at least partially clad in vinyl. The walls of the main block and the ell are both sheltered by shallow-pitched hip roofs that have wide overhanging boxed eaves supported by paired wood brackets, and the roof of the main block is still crowned by its original square plan hip-roofed cupola, which features two oblong one-light windows on each of its four sides. The principal facade of the house faces south onto STH 20, while the side elevation visible in the survey photograph faces east. An original one-story hip-roofed veranda encircles the south and east-facing sides of the main block and it still retains its original paired supporting posts and scroll-sawn frieze ornamentation. All of the main block's original windows appear to have been replaced, however, and both the windows and the window openings themselves have been altered on the rear ell, which also appears to have been given a small one-story extension at a later date. Historic maps of Racine County show that this farmstead was owned by G. W. Hoyt in 1858 and a house is indicated at this location on the 1858 map but it is not known if it is the same one. The house was then owned by Ira D. Rice from at least 1873 until at least 1887. In its intact state it is likely that this house would have been eligible for NRHP listing based on its architectural significance but it has now been altered and it is not believed that this example retains sufficient integrity to justify listing in the NRHP." - "Mukwanago and Waterford 7.5 Quads", WisDOT ID #1300-09-00, Prepared by Timothy F Heggland (MAP) (2005). 2012- "The Rice-Kordus House was constructed circa 1865 in the Italianate style. The house is irregular in plan with a 2 1/2-story square block and a 2-story ell attached at the north elevation of the main square block. Both have asphalt shingle, hipped gable roofs with vinyl siding on the exterior walls. A 1-story addition was added to the north elevation of the ell prior to 1975. Both the ell mass of the house and the 1-story addition are raised on a masonry foundation. A garage has also been added to the west elevation of the ell mass of the house. The principal elevation faces east. The favade of the main square block is symmetrical in plan. A square, hipped roof cupola rises from the center of the roof with widely overhanging eaves supported by large decorative brackets and a narrow, rectangular window centered between the brackets. The roofline of the main block and the ell mass of the house contains widely overhanging eaves with wide band trim and is supported by pairs of small decorative brackets. At the second story, two double-hung windows are set evenly in the east facade of the square block. A 1-story, hipped roof porch wraps around the east and south elevation of the house supported by a decorative cornice and brackets in the eaves. The entrance is centered in the east elevation under the porch with a double-hung window set evenly on either side." - "STH 83, Mukwanago and Waterford 7.5 Quads", WisDOT ID #1300-09-71, Prepared by GLARC, Inc (Megan Daniels) (2012). |
