NOTES
Additional Information:The Hoppe House is a Queen Anne style house with original windows, plaster wall, hardwood floors and paint-free oak trim. It has a steeply sloped hipped roof with lower cross gables, returned eaves, and a round tower in the corner. It has asymmetrical massing, wood clapboard siding and lavish surface decoration. The larger facade has palladian windows, as does the smaller gable over the side bay, and is sided with shingles. It has a garlanded frieze over the front half of the hosue and the front window, and the main bay window has a ten-over-one configuration.

William Hoppe (1870-1948) bought the corner lot at the intersection of Edward and Chandler Streets from the Frederick Stanton Perkins estate in 1902 for $305. Hoppe was a prominent builder in Burlington credited with over 40 houses, commercial, factory, and public buildings, plus numerous remodels and additions. Buildings of special note contracted by Hoppe were the new Winkler School, Racine County Tuberculosis Sanitarium, Memorial Hospital, the Soo Line Depot and Browns Lake Golf Course.

Hoppe and his wife, Anne (nee Rueter) had no children, but in March 1912 they adopted Kathryn, the 2 1/2 month old daughter of Mrs. Hoppe's cousin who had died after childbirth. Kethryn married Irwin Fonk in 1937 and they raised their four children in this house. The house stayed in the Hoppe family for over 100 years.
