MAP CODE 78 ON THE DOT MAP IS FOR THE ORIGINAL LOCATION. THE HOUSE WAS MOVED IN 1996. TO BE DEMOLISHED IN 1996 FOR A COMMUNITY CENTER. WOOD SHINGLES IN GABLES. SQUARE CNR TURRET W/BRACKETED EAVES AND PYRAMIDAL ROOF. HEAVY STONE SILLS. This house is where Caroline Quarlss is reported to have been sheltered for a night during her stay in the Spring Prairie area. Gardner, who came from New York, was the first settler in Spring Prairie township, arriving in 1836. As other settlers arrived, several stayed with him until they got situated. Gardner's farm and the surrounding area eventually became known as Gardner's Prairie. The former Gardner farm is now a Wilson farm. |
