| Additional Information: | A 'site file' exists for this property. It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the Wisconsin Historical Society, Division of Historic Preservation-Public History. This structure is an excellent example of small commercial buildings. Its design is influenced with classical elements but the form is determined by the structural members. Paul Weise operated a combination furniture store, upholstery and rug cleaners in the building. Surveyed in 1986 with map code 260/9. Map name was LUQS 359. 2010: This is a three-story, Neoclassical Revival-style brick building with commercial space on the lower floor. The building has a corbelled brick cornice and features modest limestone decoration, which includes beltcourses over the first and third stories. The first story has large windows with multiple-light, leaded glass transoms and sidelights framing the entrance. Six-over-one, wooden sash windows are found on the south elevation. Upper stories feature one-over-one, double-hung sash windows resting on limestone sills. Designed by A.C. Eschweiler for owner Paul Weise, the subject building was constructed in 1903. Eschweiler later designed a third story, which was added in 1910. An unspecified addition designed by Leenhouts & Guthrie was constructed in 1922. Paul Weise operated a combination furniture store, upholstery and rug cleaners in the building. The company remained in the Weise family into at least the 1990s and it remains a landmark business on Milwaukee's East Side. Resurveyed as part of Milwaukee Downtown Connector Arch/History Survey (2010), Prepared by Heritage Research. DOE completed by Heritage Research (2011). (WHS compliance # 10-0983, name: Milwaukee Downtown Connector) |
