Milwaukee Connector Survey, Prepared by Heritage Research (2010). DOE prepared by Heritage Research (2010).

2010: These two nearly identical houses on separate lats are well-appointed, two-and-one-half-story, red brick residences executed in the High Victorian Gothic Style. The house at 1708 N. Farwell has a hipped roof with gabled wings. The primary (northwest) facade features decorative brackets in the gable, a bracketed, one-story bay and a decorative wooden entrance hood. Window openings feature brick hoods with carved stone keystones and limestone sills. Fenestration consists of one-over-one, wooden sash windows. The building rests on a limestone foundation. The building at 1714-1716 N Farwell is identical except that it is brown brick and features one bay window on the northeast sidewall infilled with glass block.

These two homes were designed by James Douglas and built in 1878. Both buildings were constructed for Justus Vallat, who was an engineer at a local flour mill. The Vallat family lived at 1708 N. Farwell and appeared to have rented out the adjacent house at 1714-1716 N. Farwell. After 1900, both homes were used either as residences or sites of small businesses.

DOE prepared jointly with house at 1708 N. Farwell (AHI# 106613). See the records for 1708 N. Farwell for more information.
