Tax and census records indicate that Edward Groat owned this house as early as 1870. Groat was born in 1839 in New York. By 1870, he and his wife, Mary, had moved to Waterford. He operated the Groat & McKenzie hardware store until at least 1900 and died on 27 October 1911. Mary (d. 1937) and, later, her daughter Mary Elizabeth continued to own the property until at least 1940.
