Additional Information: | This building was constructed in 1913 for Gustave Scharnke, Sr., the proprietor of the Excelsior Roller Mills after a disasterous fire which burned the original roller mill on the site. The first mill was built in 1885. Because of changes in technology this smaller building replaced the earlier structure.New machinery enabled steel plates to grind the grain, rather than using a large millstone. The original millstone survived the fire and is located near the foundation at the front of the building. Located on the ground floor of the new building was a blacksmith shop. In the 1950s the former mill was used by its new owner as a carpentry shop. It is now used for storage. |
