Additional Information:A 'site file' exists for this property. It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the Wisconsin Historical Society, State Historic Preservation Office. Historical Statement: The Stehling house was constructed in 1892 by Charles Stehling, and architect and builder. He is listed as a contractor between 1895 and 1900, but thereafter until 1917 as an architect. Apparently he was involved with primarily commercial construction since the 1905 City Directory lists him as presidenct-treasurer of CHarles H> Stehling Co., Tannery Architectsm machinery and tools, located at 508 - 510 Commerce St. He lived in this house until 1921, the year of his death. His widow lived in this house until 1922. By 1925 this house had been converted to a fraternity house , Phi Beta Pi.
