It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the Wisconsin Historical Society, State Historic Preservation Office. ELABORATE MOULDED AND DENTILLED METAL CORNICE W/BRACKETS OVER PILASTERS. BRICK WALL PILASTERS. ALTERED 1ST FLR FRONT. LIMESTONE SILLS AND LINTELS. SURVIVED FIRE OF 1882 BUT FACADE WAS REMODELED. ORIGINALLY A GREEK REVIVAL BLDG. 1ST FLR ATTACHED TO ADJACENT BLDG. Designed by Lucas Bradley, Racine's first architect. This building was constructed to house the offices of Henry S. Durand, who came to Racine in 1843. The following year he became an agent of the Aetna Life Insurance Company, and he claimed to have issued the first insuranc policy in Wisconsin. Durand also dealt in land, produce, lumber, and coal. He owned timberlands in Michigan annd five first class ships on the Great Lakes. In partnership with three others, he bought land and laid out the cit of LaCrosse.
