NOTES
Additional Information:A 'site file' exists for this property. It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the Wisconsin Historical Society, State Historic Preservation Office. SEE SOS! FILES AT THE NATIONAL MUSEUM OF AMERICAN ART IN WASHINGTON, D.C. FOR MORE INFORMATION. Monument was produced by the Ryegate Monument Works of South Ryegate, Vermont. Monument is made entirely of grey Ryegate granite and stands 61 1/2 feet tall. The figure topping the tapered column is 8'9" tall and represents a soldier standing picket duty. During the Civil War, Racine sent many men to serve in the Union forces, many of whom died or suffered terribly for their country. This monument was erected in honor of those men and the unveiling was attended by General Edward Bragg, Commander of the Iron Brigade, General Lucius Fairchild, who lost an arm at Gettysburg and was later U.S. Minister to Spain and three term Governor of Wisconsin, then-Governor Jeremiah Rusk, and then-District Attorney Henry Allen Cooper. The monument is located in the city's original public square. It has been known as Monument Square ever since this monument was erected.
