Additional Information: | A 'site file' (Bender Farmstead) exists for this property. It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the Wisconsin Historical Society, Division of Historic Preservation. The piggery is a part of a highly intact famstead with buildings dating from circa 1880 to circa 1920. Also present on the property are a historic house, dairy barn with an attached silo, chicken coop, stacking barn, and machine shed. The buildings do not represent an ethnographic farmstead, rather the buildings are laid out according to the topography. The buildings represent the diversified farming traditionally undertaken by the Benders. The piggery, like most of the agricultural buildings in the historic portion of the farmstead, is built into the hillside. The framed buildings sits on a stone foundation. Just above the level of the foundation on the north side are hinged clean-out louvers for the pens. A door to the yard is located on the south elevation. Ehrenreich and Louise Bender founded the farm in 1868 when they bought the land from the United States government. Both Ehrenreich and Louise were born in Wittenburg, Germany. The farm remains in the Bender family. |
