Additional Information: | A 'site file' exists for this property. It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the Wisconsin Historical Society, State Historic Preservation Office. This unusually long and narrow house appears to have been drastically remodelled around the turn of the century in the then-popular Classical Revival style. It was probably built by Pushee, who sold groceries, wallpaper, gas fixtures and paint. The sides, which still show the age of the structure, have paired scroll-cut brackets. When the portico was added, two second floor windows were equipped with balconies, and the front facade was faced with smooth, flush siding. PEDIMENTED GABLE. SEGMENTAL ARCHED WINDOWS. South Side Historic District Walking Tour Guide, 1993: "The oldest section of this house is probably the cottage built about 1850 by Bernard Engle, a cooper. The main section was completed about 1872 by George Marshall, a carpenter. From 1874 and for nearly 30 years it was the home of Thomas and Mandana Pushee. He was a downtown grocer. The houses present "dollhouse" appearance however was created by Katherine Jones, who lived here with her husband John Roland after 1918. According to her son, she was so fascinated by the facade of the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island that she had the from remodeled in a minature imitation of the hotel. Mr. Jones was a corporate officer of the W.H. Pugh Coal Company, one of Racine's oldest businesses. The house remained in the family until the 1980s." |
