NOTES
Additional Information:Mason was Duke and Turner Co. Originally owned by M.A. Hoyt and F.W. Parks. Demolition permit applied for 10/1983. Milwaukee Historic Preservation Commission declined to designate 10/17/1983. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE: Small brick commercial building with arcaded facade by stone trim and decorative brickwork. This building and its counterpart at 753-55 N. Plankinton were the last remaining buildings of their scale and style in the 700 block of N. Plankinton. A 1903 drawing (in PICTORIAL AND DESCRIPTIVE ACCOUNT OF MILWAUKEE. 1903, not published) shows the bulding with its original first floor facade; a large window dominated the ground story with a doulbe door at the south end. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: This building was constructed for the Milwaukee Daily News, published from March 3, 1887 to Oct. 15, 1918 (title varies: Daily News, 1887-1889). The founders and editors of the daily were William A. Hoyt (1889-1918) and F.W. Parks. The paper was published at this address until 1918, when it merged with Evening Wisconsin.
